Payment statuses explained

Every status a payment can hold and what moves it forward.

Each payment carries one status at a time, with a full history on the payment detail page.

The statuses

  • Pending — the buyer has opened your checkout but nothing has arrived yet. No money has moved. A Pending payment is not money on its way; it is a buyer who may or may not go through with it.
  • Arriving — we can see the buyer's payment and are waiting for the network to make it final. Nothing has settled yet; a payment at this stage can still be rejected. There is nothing for you to do while we wait.
  • Paid — final. The amount arrived (within the small difference we accept) and is now in your payment contract — nothing else has to happen.
  • Paid less than asked — less arrived than the link asked for. This happens when a buyer changes the amount on the checkout page before paying, and it also happens when someone skips the link and sends money straight to your payment contract. See Handling underpayments.
  • Did not go through — nothing arrived, so no money moved. The buyer can pay again using the same link.
  • Refunded / Part refunded — historical statuses from the retired in-product refund flow; older payments may still show them.

Status changes are automatic

Zoyn watches the payment network and promotes payments without any action from you. Every transition is recorded with a timestamp and reason in the payment's audit history, which you can see at the bottom of the payment detail page.

Legal & regulatory disclosures

Zoyn is software. It is not a bank, a payment processor, a payment gateway, a money transmitter or a money services business. Zoyn is never the seller in a sale (the "merchant of record"). Zoyn never holds a shop's money, and does not decide how long a payment company may hold it. When a customer pays by card or bank, the payment company handles that payment under its own terms and may hold it for a short time. The money then goes to the shop's own payment contract once the payment network has confirmed it.

Businesses can be based in 64 jurisdictions. A US state stays open when at least one checkout partner still serves buyers there. Customers can pay from 130+ countries through the checkout providers we connect to; which countries customers can pay from is set by those providers, not by Zoyn, and may change without notice. Not available in sanctioned jurisdictions: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and the Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.
